Resonance is an interactive installation composed of multiple monochromatic resin discs. Each disc is cast in one of twelve hues the artist refers to as the twelve fundamental colors of the visible spectrum. Red, Red-Orange, Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow, Yellow-Green, Green, Blue-Green, Blue, Blue-Violet, Violet, and Red-Violet. The sculptures express pixelated architecture in physical space, blurring the line between virtual and material content. The physical pixelation, expressed as voxels, results from a perceptual condition, in which the varying thickness of each sculpture’s physical body, thin at its edge, thick at its center, lets light reveal a low-resolution, pixelated edge condition that gradually melds into a deeply saturated, hi-resolution center.
The installation is additionally layered through a digital augmentation through which each sculpture can be experienced. The artist’s artificial sensory app developped for these works, titled Resonant Lens, reads light information and converts that data to sound in real-time, making light audible. Resonant Lens is os a sensory recognition AI programmed to recognize each of the sculptures when the app sees a Resonant Disc. Once the Resonant Lens locks on to each disk, it generates the pure sound from the light frequencies of the sculpture’s hue. Resonant Lens acts as an extension of the five senses, augments reality, and allows viewers to hear what they see.
